At the top of the stairs we enter an austere white space dominated by a monumental abstract painting that bears some superficial resemblance to Ngurrara II. A dense weave of entangled red, yellow, green, white and orange threads is divided by nine thicker, branching and roughly vertical columns of blue paint that read like the measures in musical notation. Even from a distance the painting communicates a sense of tightly organized chaos but, as we go to inspect its surface more closely, we are plunged into darkness. This is what mum was complaining about. Don’t worry, just count to ten … the lights come on again. Let’s take this chance to observe the room in which we’re standing: a cube composed of four white walls lit by spot lamps clamped to steel tracks running across the high ceiling, a poured concrete floor painted an elegant light grey.
